Best practice: Digital accessibility
Exclusively inclusive – since June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) has required museums to make their digital offerings accessible to everyone. Sounds like a chore? We see this as an opportunity to take digital inclusion one step further. Experience how digital accessibility can inspire visitors beyond Alt-texts and contrast ratios.
Virtual reality for more inclusion
Imagine your exhibition contains an exhibit that is physically difficult to access – such as an object in an elevated area or an angled installation that is not accessible to people with limited mobility. VR can be a solution here: visitors can explore the exhibit virtually in 360°, without any physical obstacles.
Together with our partner zetcom, we implemented a VR experience for the Qantas Founders Museum that makes historical aircraft such as the ‘Lockheed Super Constellation’ and a ‘Boeing 747’ virtually accessible. Overlaid information and audio content complement the virtual experience on the Meta Quest 3. VR glasses are available on site and offer a barrier-free alternative tour that not only inspires people with mobility impairments, but also families and international technology fans – and thus sets new standards in the inclusive communication of culture and knowledge.
Sarah Johnson from the Qantas Founders Museum is delighted with the result. In a recent interview with ABC Brisbane radio station, the curator said that the virtual tours are a real ‘game changer’ to give all visitors to the museum an equal experience – listen to it here from minute 59:50.
