Together with the St. Pölten UAS, we are researching the development of a virtual learning environment that enables collaborative learning for young people and explores the opportunities of VR as an interactive teaching tool.

In Austria, VR has hardly been used as a learning space to date. Yet virtual environments offer new opportunities for knowledge transfer and collaborative learning. Interactive experiences using VR can, for example, visualise gender-sensitive content and break down stereotypical ways of thinking. For the three-year research project, we are developing a practical VR toolkit for the education and museum sector with the aim of promoting collaborative and self-efficacious learning for young people (aged 10-14).n.

Research questions

• How can VR environments strengthen the self-efficacy of young people?

• Which VR technologies are suitable for practical use in schools?

• Which design elements and narrative structures are particularly effective?

• How can museum content be conveyed in a gender-sensitive and interactive way?

• How can a flexible storytelling system be developed for VR?

Approach

• Prototypical implementation of a VR toolkit with open source technologies

• Participatory research with students, teachers & cultural mediators

• Playful & interactive design for intuitive use

We are looking for schools and museums as partners
