As part of the EU research project MEMORISE, a digital learning platform with an accompanying app is being developed for the Bergen-Belsen and Westerbork memorial sites. The aim is to preserve the cultural heritage of these places and make the memory of victims of Nazi persecution accessible to future generations.

MEMORISE links the personal life stories of former concentration camp inmates with key events in Nazi history.
This biographical approach opens up a multi-perspective view of the history of both memorial sites and places individual experiences in a broader historical context.

The platform is aimed equally at school classes, interested laypeople and academics, and offers differentiated access for different contexts of knowledge and use.

Our contribution

As a technology partner of MEMORISE, we are responsible for the design and implementation of key digital components.

This includes front-end and back-end development for a holistic learning experience – on-site and off-site – with individualised learning journeys.

In addition, we are developing a tool for integrating archive data that links historical sources with learning experiences in a uniform and intuitive user interface, as well as another tool that supports employees in storytelling and facilitates the development of educational offerings.

Publish on the platform

In future, other institutions dedicated to the sensitive communication of Nazi history will also be able to publish their own content free of charge on the MEMORISE learning platform.

The three story formats – diary, multimedia and thought provoker – open up a wide range of opportunities to actively participate in digital remembrance culture and bring new perspectives to light.
