Explore historical cameras – anytime and anywhere. The important collection of the WestLichtmuseum in Vienna is now also presenting its treasures digitally. In particular, the detailed 3D views of important cameras offer unique insights into the history of photographic equipment.

Enter the online collection

Around 100 cameras from a collection of 360 devices can now be explored digitally. As well as providing detailed information about the manufacturer or camera type, the digital collection offers a real highlight for photography enthusiasts: highly detailed 3D views of iconic cameras that provide unique insights into the development of photographic technology. You can see even the smallest details with the zoom function!

Early “drone camera” in detail

Visitors cannot even get this close during a physical visit: a historical carrier pigeon camera can be viewed from all angles in the 3D viewer, showing how historical drone camera flights were made.

Highlight: Timeline view

Another highlight of the website is the innovative timeline view, which allows visitors to discover cameras in their historical context. This is complemented by a filter and search function as well as various display modes (tile, list and timeline view).
